This weekend, the Swan River Chapter of the Harley Owners Group celebrates a remarkable milestone - 15 years of bringing people together through a shared passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles.
While the motorcycles may have been what first connected members, ask anyone involved in the Chapter what keeps them coming back and the answer is almost always the same: the people.
For Chapter Assistant Director Mark Pobjoy, who has been part of the Chapter for 14 of its 15 years, the anniversary is about much more than the number itself.
"It's the friendships we've built along the way," Mark said. "People join because they love Harley-Davidsons, but they stay because of the community."
Since its formation in 2011, the Swan River Chapter has grown into the largest Harley Owners Group chapter in Western Australia. Today, it includes over 350 members, with more than 150 active participants who regularly ride, volunteer and attend events throughout the year.
But statistics only tell part of the story.
Behind every ride, every event and every gathering are friendships that have been built over thousands of kilometres, shared experiences and countless conversations over coffee stops, country roads and weekend adventures.
The Chapter's story began when Oliver Dunkel established Perth Harley-Davidson and created the Swan River Chapter, providing local Harley owners with a place to connect. Fifteen years later, that vision has evolved into something far greater than a riding group.
For many members, it has become a second family.
Director Carmen Starmer knows that feeling well.
"When I started riding, my children would ride on the back with me," she said. "It's always had that family atmosphere. People genuinely care about one another."
That welcoming culture has become one of the defining characteristics of the Chapter. Riders come from all walks of life, representing a broad range of ages, backgrounds and professions. Many members are joined by partners and pillions, while others remain active in the community long after they've stopped riding.
The strong female presence within the Chapter is another source of pride, with women playing an active role both on and off the road.
Over the years, members have celebrated life's milestones together, supported one another through difficult times and formed friendships that extend far beyond motorcycles.
That sense of connection is also reflected in the Chapter's commitment to giving back.
Whether it's supporting breast cancer awareness through the annual Pink Ribbon Ride, participating in the Legacy Brotherhood Ride, organising children's charity initiatives or coming together for a Memorial Ride, members consistently use their shared passion to make a positive impact in the wider community.
The annual Pink Ribbon Ride has become the heart of the Chapter's community efforts and remains its largest and most celebrated event. Bringing together riders, families and supporters from across Western Australia, the ride raises vital funds and awareness for breast cancer support and research while showcasing the generosity and spirit of the Harley-Davidson community. For many members, it represents everything the Swan River Chapter stands for. Friendship, compassion and the power of people coming together to make a difference.
The friendships forged within Swan River Chapter have also led to adventures across the state. Recently, members from all four Western Australian H.O.G. chapters rode together to Augusta, demonstrating the strong connections that exist throughout the Harley-Davidson community.
As the Swan River Chapter celebrates its 15th anniversary, the milestone serves as a reminder that the true measure of success isn't the number of members, the kilometres travelled or the years that have passed.
It's the friendships formed.
It's the support offered during difficult times.
It's the people who show up ride after ride, year after year.
It's the feeling of belonging.
Fifteen years on, the Swan River Chapter remains proof that Harley-Davidson ownership is about far more than motorcycles. It is about community, connection and creating memories that last a lifetime.
For hundreds of members past and present, the Swan River Chapter has become more than a club.
It has become family.
